HIGHLIGHT OF THE NUCJ - SUG ASPIRANTS DEBATE

The National Union of Campus Journalists, NUCJ-UCC, held a Students’ Union Government debate on May 23, 2026, at Malabor Square, University of Calabar, as part of the student union election process.

The event was designed to give students aspiring to executive positions a platform to present their visions, demonstrate leadership qualities, and engage directly with the student body. The program opened with a prayer led by JCCF President Papa Sunday Ashi and a welcome address from the NUCJ-UCC President, who stressed the importance of discipline and respect throughout the session. Candidates took turns addressing key issues affecting the university, while past and present SUG executives alongside CUECO members attended to observe.

The debate focused on evaluating candidates’ positions on academic improvement, student welfare, and discipline and unity within the school. Each participant was questioned on key areas and assessed on clarity of speech, strength of arguments, confidence, composure, and ability to respond under pressure. The format encouraged healthy competition and gave students a clearer basis for making informed decisions ahead of the elections.

The event concluded on a positive note, with organizers describing it as successful and impactful. By providing a fair platform for aspirants to connect with the student body, the debate reinforced the role of leadership and active participation in campus governance. With the SUG elections approaching, anticipation among students continues to build.
