CROSS RIVER STATE FLAGS OFF 2026 UN DAY ON DRUG ABUSE WITH A MASSIVE RALLY FROM EFIO ETTE ROUNDABOUT TO MILLENNIUM PARK 11:11

The Cross River State Drug Control Committee, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, and the Office of the Wife of the Governor, has flagged off activities to commemorate the 2026 United Nations Day on Drug Abuse with a sensitization rally across Calabar metropolis.
The event, held on Thursday, 26th June 2026, began at 8:00 AM prompt from Efio Ette Roundabout with a road walk that terminated at Millennium Park, 11:11, where key stakeholders addressed participants on the dangers of substance abuse.
This year’s theme is: “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses.” The theme underscores the need for fresh strategies to tackle evolving drug trends among youths.
The program was chaired by Her Excellency, Bishop Dr. Mrs. Eyoanwan Bassey Edet Otu, Wife of the Cross River State Governor and Chairman of the State Drug Control Committee.
Several agencies and dignitaries joined the movement, including officials from the NDLEA, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigerian Correctional Service, Nigeria Police Force, and the Military. Also in attendance were the Commissioner for Women Affairs, the Commissioner for Housing, and other government representatives. The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Cross River State Chapter, was also present to mobilize students and amplify the anti-drug message on campuses.
Speakers at Millennium Park, 11:11 charged youths to be agents of change in their schools, homes, and communities. They emphasized prevention, rehabilitation, and collective action as critical tools in the fight against drug abuse. With unified action from government, security agencies, students, and families, the event sent a strong message that drug abuse has no place in Cross River.
The event was rounded up with group photographs, goodwill messages, and commendations to all partners who made the commemoration a success. Organizers said the rally is expected to deepen awareness, encourage early intervention, and inspire more young people to choose a path of purpose, health, and productivity. The program was thereafter closed with renewed calls for a safer, drug-free Cross River for the next generation.
